Basic Coverage

Most commercial operators will have as minimum third party fire and theft coverage to protect their business should someone be injured as a result of an accident. An injury with a lawsuit could quickly put a small business in jeopardy, so third party coverage is an a must. In addition many operators will also arrange for comprehensive coverage to cover damages to their vehicle such as windscreen replacement etc.

Extra Coverage

There may be times when you feel that extra coverage of some sort may be of interest to you. Your business may be at risk of you do not have this coverage or you just want to know that you are covered for various events and do not need to worry about the impact of replacing all of your tools would have on your cash flow, for example. Tools and spare parts coverage may be an example of the type of coverage you feel that you need. Another is legal coverage to recover damages that are not covered under your vehicle policy. You might want to file a claim for physical injuries or other claims not covered by your won insurance. Windscreen breakage insurance can also be purchased separately if you do not have comprehensive insurance.

How much do you Need?

How much insurance you need is for some a difficult question. There are many variables and they are usually very specific to the business you are in. Some basic principles may help you. If you are considering replacement vehicle insurance to keep you on the road while your vehicle is being repaired, you will need to consider the cost of the insurance vs. the lost income for the period your vehicle is in the repair shop. You will have to make an assessment of how long it may take to repair your vehicle as well after a minor accident or a major accident. Tool replacement is another area that you may want to consider. If your tools are worth thousands, then it may be worth your while to also take this, while if they have a minimal cost, then you may forgo this expense. Comparing cost of insurance vs. the cost of not having it and the probability of this event happening to you should help you decide if you need that particular insurance package.
